Cycling Holidays in the Rhine Valley

While the Rhine Cycle Path runs the full length of the river, from its source in the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, the words "The Rhine" conjure up in most people's minds images of the Rhine Gorge from Mainz in the south to Bonn in the north. The Upper Middle Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz is now a UNESCO World Heritage Region.

Here the river runs between rocky banks and round sharp turns, while the narrowness of the gorge produces treacherous currents and whirlpools, making a passage of this part of the river a severe navigational test.
The Rhine at St Goarshausen
Pretty half-timbered towns, many dominated by castles, line the banks of the river. Above the towns are world-famous vineyards and above them are peaceful forests and glades. At the highest point of the left bank begin the hills of the Hunsrück to the south of Koblenz, and the Eifel to the north, while the right bank forms the edge of the Taunus and the Westerwald.
The Rhine at Boppard
Cyclists visiting this region can enjoy the Rhine Cycle Path from our comfortable base in the heart of the Rhine Gorge, at St. Goar. From here you can cycle both banks of the river, using the frequent ferries and local trains to cover large parts of the Rhine Gorge. Alternatively, those who fancy something more demading can explore the cycle trails up the side valleys, while those looking for something more relaxing can explore the vineyards and taste some of the fine wines made here.

The three cycling guides to the Rhine Valley cover the full length of the river. Unfortunately they are only available with German text. This holiday includes the guide for the Rhine from Mainz to Rotterdam which is also available from us on its own. To order, phone 01946 861652. The price is £10.90 plus post and packing (£1.60 with the UK).

A six day Single Centre Holiday
In the centre of the Upper Middle Rhine lies the small port town of St. Goar, dominated by the massive ruins of Rheinfels Castle, the largest castle of all on the Middle Rhine. A visit is strongly recommended. St. Goar himself is the local vintner's patron.
