The Altmühl Valley is the home of cycling holidays in Germany.
25 years ago, few Germans cycled,
except around the towns close to the Dutch border. Today millions of people cycle, on excellent
infrastructure, and although not well-known in the UK, this was where it all started.
Dramatic limestone cliffs, beautiful water meadows teaming with wildlife, strong local
arts, crafts and a thriving local food culture make the Altmühl Valley the perfect
holiday destination. This tour covers a little more than the Altmühl Valley itself, starting in historic Rothenburg ob der Tauber and finishing in the cathedral city of Regensburg, some 12 miles from where the Altmühl enters the Danube. |
| Day 1. Arrive in the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. You may well want to book an extra day at the start of your holiday in order to explore the town fully. | |
Day 2. .The first day involves cycling past the source of the Altmühl
to the attractive Franconian town of Herrieden (about 30 miles) Day 3. Cycle first to the Altmühlsee lake, then alongside other lakes of the New Franconian Lake District to end in the romantic medieval imperial city of Weissenburg (about 30 miles). (Sometimes it may be necessary to divert to Treuchtlingen instead.) |
Day 4. Cycle across country to join the River Altmühl just east of
Treuchtlingen. Continue through Pappenheim, past the cliffs of the Twelve
Apostles and through Solnhofen and Dollnstein to Eichstätt
(about 30 miles). Day 5. Cycle past a Roman fort, past a wetlands nature reserve to Arnsberg Castle, Kipfenberg and the fortified church at Kinding. Then via Hirschberg Castle to Beilngries (about 28 miles). Day 6. Cycle through watermeadows to Dietfurt and the Main-Danube Canal. Continue past the ruins of Flügelsberg Castle and then Eggersberg Castle (now a hotel) to Riedenburg, then to the wooden bridge at Essing and Prunn Castle to end at Kelheim (about 28 miles). |
Day 7. The final stage takes you along the Danube Valley
to Regensburg, with its fine cathedral (about 22 miles). |
