The Danube Cycle Tour Vienna to Budapest 2010This tour is not described in our brochure |
This tour through central and eastern Europe consists of six days cycling and seven nights in hotels. Overnight stopping points may vary from those indicated on the map. | |
On this tour you cycle from the Austrian capital of Vienna
via into the Slovak capital of Bratislava before entering
Hungary and continuing through the gentle Transdanubian hills
to Esztergom and Budapest. Most of the route in Austria is traffic free, but the standard of the route is inevitably less refined in Slovakia and Hungary. |
Day 1. Arrive in Vienna. If you have arrived by air in Budapest, transfer to the start of the tour at Vienna. |
Day 2. Cycle from Vienna through the Stopfenreuther Au National Park,
then to the Roman fort of Carnuntum, where you should definitely spend an hour
or so. Overnight in the area of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg (about 29 miles). Day 3. Follow the river through Hainburg and Wolfsthal into the Slovak capital of Bratislava. Continue into Hungary through a number of farming villages to Moson-Magyaróvár (about 40 miles). |
Day 4. Cycle through the marshy landscape of this part of Hungary past
the fine castle at Hedervár to the fine baroque city of Györ,
sometimes known as the city of rivers (about 28 miles). |
Day 5. From Györ you cycle via the town of Bábolna, famous for
its horses to Komarárom, then continue to Almásfüzitö.
Here you leave the river and head into the gentle transdanubian hills, to end
at the small town of Tata (about 39 miles). Day 6. This day's stretch is quite hilly and forested. Your goal is the former Hungarian capital of Esztergom, situated on the Golden Bend in the river (about 34 miles). |
Day 7. The first town you come to on the final day is another
former Hungarian capital, Visegrad. Continue to Szentendre, famous for its craft
workshops and a popular day trip for the people of Budapest. Follow the river
towards Budapest for a short distance, but we recommend that you take the train
or the river boat for the remainder of the way into Budapest, as most of the
route from here is on, or alongside, a busy main road (about 37 miles). |
