The Danube Cycle Tour Vienna to Budapest 2012

The Easternmost Stretch of the Danube Cycle Path
Map of the Danube from Vienna to Budapest This tour through central and eastern Europe consists of six days cycling and seven nights in hotels. Overnight stopping points may vary from those indicated on the map.
On this tour you cycle from the Austrian capital of Vienna via into the Slovak capital of Bratislava before entering Hungary and continuing through the gentle Transdanubian hills to Esztergom and Budapest.

Most of the route in Austria is traffic free, but the standard of the route is inevitably less refined in Slovakia and Hungary.
Day 1. Arrive in Vienna. Why not book an extra night here to allow you to explore the city in full?
If you have arrived by air in Budapest, transfer to the start of the tour at Vienna.
Charles Church Viena Museums
Day 2. Cycle from Vienna to the fortified town of Hainburg, then to the Roman fort of Carnuntum, where you should definitely spend an hour or so. Cross into Slovakia and end the day in the capital, Bratislava (about 42 miles).

Day 3. Follow the river to the Hungarian border, continuing along the southern branch of the river through a number of farming villages to Mosonmagyaróvár (about 28 miles).
Bratislava
Day 4. Cycle through the marshy landscape of this part of Hungary past the fine castle at Hedervár to the fine baroque city of Győr, sometimes known as the city of rivers (about 28 miles).
Pannonian Plain Komarom
Day 5. From Győr you follow the River Rába back to the main course of the Danube. Cross back into Slovakia at Medveďov. Continue through Čicov to the twin city of Komárno/Komárom (about 39 miles).
A visit to the impressive Monostori fortress is included.

Day 6. This day's stretch closely follows the river bank past a Roman fort and through timeless villages to the former Hungarian capital of Esztergom, situated on the Golden Bend in the river (about 34 miles).
Esztergom The Danube at Pest
Day 7. The final day is the highlight of the trip; the Danube Bend, on of the finest areas in all Europe. Your first stop is another former Hungarian capital, Visegrad. The view of the city is much as it was in 1488! Continue to Szentendre, famous for its craft workshops and a popular day trip for the people of Budapest (about 34 miles).

You can cycle the remaining 11 miles to Budapest, but we recommend that you hand in your bikes in Szentendre and take the train or the river boat (pay locally) for the remainder of the way into Budapest, as most of the route from here is on, or alongside, a busy main road.
