The Danube is the longest river in Europe. Rising in the Black Forest,
it first has to cut through the Swabian Jura, where it forms a superb gorge.
Then the river continues past striking palaces, impressive abbeys, the
highest church spire in the world, fine water meadows and Roman remains.
Many very attractive towns lie on the river, some with fine cathedrals. |

At Passau the river leaves Germany to enter Austria. The river, now much wider
continues through fascinating countryside, open valleys, forests and vineyards
to reach Austria's capital, Vienna. Over 60% of touring cyclists make the Passau to Vienna Tour their first cycle touring holiday. From Vienna the river continues eastward, forming the border between Austria and Slovakia, then Slovakia and Hungary. The cycle route along the river ends the Hungarian capital, Budapest, through the river continues through Hungary and Romania and Serbia en route to the Black Sea. |

Cycling Tours We offer a number of different tours along the Danube, covering the most the whole river from its source to Budapest in Hungary. Probably the most dramatic is the first part of the route in Germany from Donaueschingen to Ulm & Regensburg. Currently, we do not offer any tour that includes the stretch of the river between Regensburg and Passau. The next stage, through Austria, is still the most popular, running from Passau to Vienna. As an alternative to cycling all the way from Passau to Vienna, you can explore the whole stretch by a combination of cycling and river cruising from Passau to Vienna and back again to Passau. The final stage, running from Vienna to Budapest, completes our range of Danube Cycling Holidays. Please phone us on 01946 861652 to discuss any of these trips further. Guidebooks A guidebook (in English) describes the route as far as Budapest. If you want to read up about the route, phone us on 01946 861652 to buy a copy. The book is available for immediate delivery for £10.75 including post and packing within the UK. For the German section from Donaueschingen to Passau we offer a combined set of maps (1:50 000) and route description in German, with a separate English translation. For the main Austrian section from Passau to Vienna, and for the Austrian & Hungarian section from Vienna to Budapest we offer a combined set of maps (1:75 000), town plans and route description in English. All are available for immediate delivery for £12.75 including post and packing within the UK. |
