The Lake Constance Cycle Tour 2010

Map of the Lake Constance Cycle Tour Lake Constance borders Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The towns on the lake are of great character; Konstanz, now German, but once Swiss, is known for the Council of Constance of 1415, where the papacy united itself in the face of the first rustlings of the Reformation and the trial of Jan Hus.
The lake is also noted for its culinary excellence. Freshwater fish are are often to be found on the menu - in particular the Felchen, unique to the lake, and the Pike.

Day 1. Arrive in Friedrichshafen.
Friedrichshafen has a rail station and an airport, about 3 miles north of the town. From the UK this airport is only served by Ryanair, from Stansted.
We understand, though, that this service will not operate after 1 May 2010.
The transfer from the airport is by taxi, which you pay for locally, or there is a train service.
You can also fly to Stuttgart or Munich, with rail connections to Friedrichshafen, or to Zürich and travel by rail and ferry.
You can, if you prefer, start the tour in Bregenz. If travelling by train, this will incur a small additional charge.

Day 2. Cycle along the eastern part of the German shore of the lake, through Langenargen and Wasserburg to Lindau, a beautiful old town on an island in the lake. You should reckon on spending a few hours in Lindau before continuing across the Austrian border into Bregenz (about 25 miles).

Day 3. Cycle from Bregenz, through the nature reserves where the Rhine runs into the lake from the alps. Then along the Swiss bank through St. Margarethen to Rorschach (about 21 miles).

View of Lindau
Day 4. Cycle along the rest of the Swiss bank of the lake, through Horn, Arbon and Romanshorn and a number of small villages to Kreuzlingen and Konstanz (about 26 miles).

Day 5. First cycle to the island of Mainau, known throughout the world for its flower gardens. Entry to the gardens is included in the price of the tour. Then follow the shore of the lake to Wallhausen, from where you take the ferry to Überlingen (about 15 miles).

Day 6. Cycle from Überlingen inland from the lake via Deisendorf to Salem where you visit the palace of the Princes of Baden. Return to the lake at Meersburg once again and continue to Friedrichshafen (about 21 miles).
